Personality: Much of Catra's behaviour throughout her life has been motivated by insecurity and deep-rooted abandonment issues. She's spent most of her life being unfavorably compared to her best friend, Adora, and while she's mostly covered it up with a cynical, cocky facade, a lifetime of derision, of being treated as though she's less valuable, less important, someone who can be overlooked and cast aside has left a mark. As a child, she kept most of her peers at arm's length with her sharp tongue and sharper claws. Adora was the only one to push through her defenses, and once she did, Catra clung hard, and when Adora saw the truth of the brutal militaristic regime they were raised in and defected, Catra saw that as a personal betrayal. Never mind that she could have gone with Adora - from Catra's perspective, by rejecting the society in which they were raised and the life they knew, Adora was also rejecting her.

While Catra had previously feigned indifference and adopted the attitude that if she was going to be blamed for screwing up anyway, she may as well not make an effort to not screw up, Adora's defection and her own rage and hurt over it kindled a vicious ambition in her. She became obsessed with succeeding, with proving herself better than Adora, better than the rest of the Horde's officers, better than anyone. If she could do that, then no one would be able to cast her aside, ignore her, make her feel like she was nothing. Her tactics became progressively more ruthless, and her ability to accept failure dwindled. Anyone who stood in her way was her enemy, even if they were someone on her side urging her to caution. There was no one she wouldn't hurt or betray if it got her one step closer to power - and so she drove off or betrayed even her staunchest supporters, which only served to drive her deeper into her furious obsession.

Catra probably would have ultimately self-destructed in a spectacularly messy fashion if three things hadn't happened: first, the mercenary shapeshifter Double Trouble cornered her to deliver an incredibly scathing takedown of her actions and demeanor that left no room to blame anyone but herself for driving off all of her friends and allies, and second, very shortly after, Catra and her then-enemy Princess Glimmer were transported onto the ship of Horde Prime, a military dictator who had taken over the known universe just as his clone, Hordak, had attempted to take over Etheria. While Catra initially attempted to ingratiate herself with Horde Prime, her failure to effectively do so coupled with the genuinely disturbing way that he saw everyone and everything as a tool and the fact that she'd begun to bond with Glimmer as the only familiar face on the ship led her to betray him and free Glimmer to rejoin Adora and her other friends, admonishing the princess not to come back for her.

Not that she expected her to; while she might have done this one good thing in the face of something even she felt was monstrous, she didn't expect anyone to see her as worth saving. Which leads to the third thing that ultimately served to save Catra from self-destruction: she was wrong. Adora, Glimmer, and their friends Bow and Entrapta - each of whom would have had very strong, very personal reasons not to risk themselves saving Catra, did rescue her, and freed her from the mind control chip Horde Prime had installed. The rescue, coupled with the fact that they were not only willing to accept her as an ally against Prime but also to make overatures of friendship, was what pushed her from self-loathing acceptance that she'd been the architect of her own misery into actively trying to be better.

And 'trying' is the operative word here. While Catra has made inroads into controlling her temper and quashing her tendency to lash out reflexively when she feels vulnerable or go on the offensive whan she feels judged, she hasn't been able to completely put these habits aside. She's still cynical and sharp-tongued, and is likely to throw up walls if someone pokes at a sore spot. It's easier to argue or retreat than show vulnerability, and though she may walk that back when it's someone who's shown they care for her, she'll still react with defensiveness first.

She also retains a competitive streak, and finds it difficult to back down when she's chosen a position or course of action. Again, her discomfort with showing vulnerability and a deeply-rooted fear of inadequacy remains, and it will take her years - and possibly a lifetime - to unlearn her defenses.

She remains cynical and slow to trust. Having seen the worst the world and the people in it have to offer - both as victim and perpetrator - she finds it far easier to believe the worst of a situation than believe the best. While she's grown to treasure her more open and trusting friends, she still sees their position as naive, a clear opening for disappointment and betrayal. While it's not impossible for people to earn her trust, it is something that has to be earned, not something she's liable to give as a matter of course.
